Their sound is usually classified as 'indie rock' although their influences include punk bands including The Jam and The Clash and their music can be enjoyed by everyone from britpoppers to alternative rockers. The band consists of; Alex Turner -vocals/guitar, Jamie Cook -guitar, Nick O'Mally-bass (who took over from Andy Nicholson in 2006) and Matt Helders-drums. The band became popular, with many sold out gigs, prior to even signing to a record label. They gave out demos which were then shared on the internet, thus building up a large fan base. In 2005 they signed to Domino records and their first single went straight to number one. January 2006 saw the release of their first album which became the fastest selling album in the UK, selling more copies on its first day than the total number of all other albums in the top 20. The Arctic Monkeys have won numerous awards including the Mercury Award for best Album 2006, Best New Band and Best British Band (NME 2006), Best British Breakthrough Act (BRIT 2006) and Best Album (BRIT 2007). |
