Patrick Stewart OBE is a well known film, TV and stage actor. At the age of 15, Stewart dropped out of school and increased his participation in local theatre. He acquired a job as a newspaper reporter, but after a year, his employer gave him an ultimatum to choose acting or journalism. He enrolled in the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in 1957 aged 17. He spent two years there, learning his craft and losing his Yorkshire accent. Stewart speaks of almost living a "double life" during this period, for while he spoke with Received Pronunciation (RP) professionally, he continued speaking in his native accent and using Yorkshire dialect with family and friends. Nominated for both Emmy and Golden Globe-awards, Stewart has had a distinguished career in theatre for nearly fifty years, including performances as various characters in Shakespearean productions. However, he is perhaps most widely known for his roles as Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the starship Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, and as Professor Xavier in the X-Men films. Stewart takes part in a lot of promotional advertising for the University of Huddersfield where he is the Chancellor. He also attends about three of the university's fifteen graduation ceremonies per year. |
